Pakistan appeals to national solidarity
Never before disaster struck so many people in the same country registered post as the floods in Pakistan. However, donations have so far been limited. The chain of solidarity appeals to national level and a day of fundraising for Wednesday, August 18.
Interview with Priska Spoerri, the spokesman of this system of collection and solidarity supported by the Swiss audiovisual public service. swissinfo.ch: The situation in Pakistan has deteriorated dramatically. Because the chain of solidarity has launched an appeal to the generosity of the Swiss nearly two weeks after the start of the floods?
Priska Spoerri: The need for help has never been questioned. We still have to make sure that our partner institutions relief were actually able to realize the aid on the ground. Up to three or four days ago we did not have this certainty. Now, however, registered post our partners have been able to establish a local network for the distribution of aid. The priorities are the distribution of drinking water, food, kitchen utensils, medicines registered post and the provision of temporary registered post accommodation. swissinfo.ch: The Chain of Solidarity registered post Tuesday launched a second registered post appeal for flood victims in Asia. How's the collection of donations?
PS: Since we re-launched the appeal registered post donations grow by the minute. Among these there are also substantial sums. swissinfo.ch: The Chain of solidarity has so far collected registered post more than 800,000 francs, a figure much lower than that which followed the earthquake in Haiti or the tsunami registered post in the Indian Ocean in 2004. How can we explain this difference?
PS: You can not compare the different fundraisers. The Haitian earthquake and tsunami disasters that have happened registered post are in a short period of time. The floods in Pakistan, however, have caused registered post damage on most days. Donations also depend on the emotional bond with the affected countries. The high sum collected by the chain of solidarity during the tsunami - 227 million francs - is directly linked to the fact that many donors knew the affected regions since we had spent the holidays. Among the people directly registered post affected, there were also many Swiss. Pakistan does not arouse the same feelings. registered post The country vienne rather related to Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism. swissinfo.ch: The victims of the floods registered post in Pakistan are also, in some way, victims registered post of the debate about Islam?
PS: As I said, the propensity to make donations depends on the perception that one has hit the country. But I believe registered post that the Swiss are aware that the victims of the floods in Pakistan have nothing to do with the politics of their country. I am therefore ready to help. swissinfo.ch: The Taliban are very active in supporting victims. They even asked the Pakistani government to give financial registered post aid from the United States. How does the Chain of solidarity in the face of the Taliban and the presence of corruption registered post in Pakistan?
PS: Pakistan registered post is known for terrorism, bombings and the Taliban. The challenges in the field of security and corruption do not exist but only in that country. In Asia, we can count on our partner relief organizations. Pakistan is a country where our partners registered post are already active, especially after the earthquake of 2005. The experience gained from our partners enables them to know the local situation and the functioning of the system: they know how to avoid corruption registered post and the Taliban. Having employees who understand the reality registered post of the place is different from sending money to work by acting relief for the first time.
