The Regal Broward Stadium 12 & RPX in Plantation, Florida opened Thursday, January 16, 2014. The new 12-screen movie theater is located in the Westfield Broward Mall near West Broward Boulevard and South University Drive, and features one of Regal Entertainment Group's big screen concept RPX auditoriums.
There wasn't an official press release from Regal about the new theater, but their "grand openings" page did list the following amenities: Digital projection in every auditorium to provide a crystal-clear picture. Real D 3D projection systems available for 3D enhanced presentations. Stadium seating provides each moviegoer a clear view of the screen. No details exist about the size of the screen in the RPX auditorium, but RPX installations typically have much larger screens, an upgraded sound system, and often more luxurious seating compared to the "standard" auditoriums. All this, of course, comes with an upcharge digital post in the price. For example, an evening show of a 2D movie for an adult is $10.50, but in the RPX auditorium, you'll pay $14.50.
The nearest movie theaters to this location are the Ridge Cinema 8 and Frank Theatres - Sunrise 11 . The RPX auditorium would compete with IMAX theaters, of which the closest digital post is the  Regal Sawgrass 23 & IMAX (about five miles West), and big screen concepts from other chains, such as AMC's ETX, but the closest one of those is at the AMC Aventura 24 (about 13 miles to the Southeast).

The housing market is a market known for its uniqueness and specificity. The issuance of mortgage backed securities, eventually leading to the 2008 crisis, was an attempt to spread this unique risk through the bundling of mortgages into investment envoi packages. The crisis and its economic and legal consequences have led to a current foreclosure backlog which is likely to drive inventory in the housing market for a while. In this context, it is interesting to note that a company, Radarlogic, has derived a daily and national envoi housing indicator in a market known for its regional and slow-moving nature. A relatively fungible daily housing index would provide the necessary level of liquidity to drive futures quotations on the index (so far housing indicators like the Case-Shiller index have been monthly or even less frequent) envoi . And, indeed, a futures on the RPX index has been quoted since February 2012.
In order to translate housing data, infrequently quoted, with stale data which is nevertheless significant, Radarlogic has created envoi a methodology to track and use the old data, while nevertheless updating daily information that comes in, by using Triple Power Laws. Without getting into the nifty details of this approach, detailed in a white paper published by the company and available on the website, envoi the basic idea is to accurately measure the price per square foot in a region (or nation). This allows for greater homogeneity of price quotation, and the price per square foot so calculated is determined by a probability distribution function which separates the "shape" from the "position". The shape is determined by the "quality" of the housing market, and changes slowly. The position is supposed to be determined by the relation between quality envoi and value in a market on a given day. These variables are then married together by means of a power law which takes into account price difference in the high, medium and low end of the power spectrum. The RPX index can then take into account all data which is relevant to determine price per square footage, such as length of time the house is on the market, quality of neighborhood, condo sales in the area, even if this data is stale and spit out a daily index, determined by both the shape and position.
The following two graphs show quite different behavior of the RPX futures (RPXCP) for March and September 2012 expiration. The futures for March 2012 expiration exhibited envoi contango behavior, the September 2012 futures exhibited backwardation. (One assumes the reference value at expiration published by Radarlogic to indicate expected spot price).
The reasons why a futures market would be in contango or backwardation are complicated, but one reason why the RPX futures would initially be in contango (March 2012 contract) and then backwardation (September 2012 contract) might just be because the housing market turned quite dramatically towards the middle of September envoi 2012, as the year to year price changes in the monthly Case-Shiller HPI index shows below.
In other words, the RPX futures were in contango for March 2012 because of the initial glut in the housing market, which turned into a more bullish situation mid 2012. Indeed, in the first quarter of 2012, the National envoi Association of Realtors indicated that the median single-family home price rose in 74 of the 146 major metropolitan areas. In addition, home inventory was also shrinking, with 22% fewer homes for sale in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the prior period, leading to an upward pressure on price. If the RPX index, and a fortiori the futures on that index captured these trends, that would explain the reversal to backwardation from contango.
The market, initially quite pessimistic on the median price per square foot in June of this year is now stabilizing at a view of approximately $200 per square foot nationally, according to the above graph. Open interest has also been increasing over the year for the March 2014 contract. Most probably what is factored into the futures price are many indicators, including macro trends, and more importantly the foreclosure backlog. Realtytrac indicates that foreclosure activity has declined somewhat from last year, with a U.S. average of 1 in every 998 units. envoi Nevertheless, even if current activity shows a moderate decline, the foreclosure backlog remains a threat to any recovery, and the RPX futures envoi seems to be taking that into account envoi into 2014, with no overt optimism regarding the housing market, but no manifest pessimism either-just envoi stability. envoi

A reader recently suggested I take a look at RPX Corporation (RPXC). Coincidentally, the next day, Union Square Research Group tweeted out a link to an article about their biggest competitor. After that, I decided I had to take a closer look at them.
A sea change occurred in the patent market over the past 15 years due to the rise of non-practicing entities (NPEs). NPEs are more commonly known by the pejorative term patent troll. In fairness, the two terms are not synonymous. NPEs do not create or sell products or services, but instead exist to monetize patents usps shipping rates through licensing and litigation. Some NPEs obtain patents through their own research and development efforts, while others accumulate patents through acquisitions. NPEs have become a major factor in the patent market and an important usps shipping rates source of liquidity for patent owners.
While most if not all NPEs use litigation as part of their strategy, a subset of NPEs own patents with the sole intention of engaging in patent enforcement litigation. This litigation is often seen as unduly aggressive and abusive. They hope that threat of a big lawsuit settlement is serious enough to extract a payment from the other party. Such companies are classic patent trolls.
I remain agnostic on the NPE / patent troll dichotomy, but I am interested in the impact they are having on the marketplace. That impact has been considerable. Corresponding with the rise of NPEs/patent trolls has been an explosion in patent enforcement litigation. Many early backers, including MSFT and GOOG, are no longer investing in IV due to IV s increased propensity for litigation in the past 3 years. Fund returns have also been disappointing. The IV investor presentation reviewed by Reuters shows that at the end of last year the average rate of return usps shipping rates for IV’s 2003 fund was 16.2% while the 2008 fund stood at 2.5%.
4. Hybrids Hybrid firms combine aspects of the three models listed above. Hybrids provide advisory services, brokerage services, litigation support and licensing support. Thanks, Joann and good afternoon everyone. I am going to give my usual quick overview before handing it to Ned for the details. Going into this year validation was a key theme at RPX. Validation of the market opportunity for our unique form of patent london drugs risk management of the value of our transaction london drugs data and of our ability to build on that data to execute efficient acquisitions, add and renew clients, continue to convince key clients london drugs to pay us more and build the foundation of a successful insurance business.
Given these goals this was another london drugs quarter of validation on our way to a solid year of 20% plus growth. Revenues grew 24% year-over-year and net income was $11.4 million or $0.21 per pro-forma diluted share. We expanded the network with three net additions to finish the quarter at 160 members 23 of whom are insurance clients. london drugs Our pipeline london drugs remains very strong and our renewal rate remained about 90%. These solid results represent a continuation of the progress we have seen since RPX signed its first client a little more than five years ago.
We are proud of what we ve accomplished in those five years. For instance we ve acquired more than $700 million worth of patents comprising what we estimate to be nearly 10% of the open market buying activities since our founding in 2008. Preemptive buying on that kind of scale has helped our clients avoid what we believe are thousands of NPE litigations and more than $1 billion in legal costs.
At london drugs the same time our ability to intervene in active litigations has resulted in more than 400 dismissals since the inception of the RPX network, that s 22% of our client s dismissals in that period. Today our network represents many of the largest technology enabled businesses in the world and through our open market and litigation activity, we believe we have reduced their aggregate NPE risk by about 40%.
That success is reflected in our renewal track record. london drugs We have had more than 80 renewal events in our history, stock renewals beyond our control M&A bankruptcy. At the end of this year we will only have had three non-renewals of any significant size out of those 8, we d only one of them in 2013.
We feel that these numbers approved that RPX s network is the single most affective way to quantitatively and consistently reduce NPE risk. We estimate this to be around the $10 billion cost every year for operating companies. Rollei RPX 100 in 35mm and medium pec poste format Since writing the post on Rollei RPX 400 last November , Maco have introduced pec poste RPX 25 to the range, repackaged the existing films, and, inevitably, prices have gone up. Macodirect no longer offer the 35mm films in twin packs (as in the image above) and nor are the medium format films sold in packs of five, although discounts are offered on orders of 10 or more. However, at €3.59 for a 35mm roll, and €3.90 medium format, the prices are still low. As I mentioned in the post on RPX 400, there are few stockists for the Rollei RPX films in the UK; at the time of writing pec poste West End Cameras ' prices remain the same at £4 per film in either format. (Edit 20/2/14: Silverprint are now stocking the range of RPX films , with both RPX 400 and RPX 100 retailing at £3.60). Rollei RPX 100 latitude pec poste test contact sheet Following my results with Rollei RPX 400, I was keen to pursue the same basic test procedures for Rollei RPX 100. As before, pec poste I began with a latitude test, shown on the contact sheet above. The first six frames are rated, left to right, 25-50-100-200-400-800; the next six frames in the second row run 25-25-50-100-200-400; the third row was shot at 100 and at 50 for some bracketing. The film was developed pec poste in Rodinal diluted 1:25 for 9 minutes pec poste at 20ºC, the manufacturer's recommended time for the box speed of 100 ISO. Although I've printed the contact sheet a little dark to clearly show the detail in the shadow areas, the results show the film to have very similar qualities to RPX 400, notably a similar latitude pec poste range, with the same transparent base and tonal rendering. Rollei RPX 100 at box speed, developed in Rodinal 1:25, 9 minutes at 20º The data sheet for Rollei RPX 100 from Maco also gives development times when rated 50 and 200 (the Massive Dev Chart also provides times for the same range ). I rarely find the need to pull process film, but for completeness, I shot a second roll at 50 EI, and developed for 7 minutes at 20ºC. Although pec poste my latitude test appeared to show the film could be exposed at 50 without changing the developing times, one of the benefits of pulling the film would be, in theory, to reduce the contrast of the negatives. This is not especially evident in the results from this roll, although as I did not shoot the same subjects, in the same lighting conditions, as with the first film rated 100, this doesn't give a truly meaningful comparison. Rollei RPX 100 at 50 EI, developed in Rodinal 1:25, 7 minutes at 20º I also pushed the film to 200 and, exceeding the manufacturer's recommended settings, also to 400 EI. At 200, developed at the recommended times in Rodinal 1:25 for 13 minutes at 20ºC, the film's qualities do not appear to be compromised, although the contrast is a little higher, more clearly seen by examining the negatives side by side with those rated 100 and 50. I erred on the side of over-development and used a time of 18 minutes in Rodinal 1:25 at 20ºC. Ordinarily such a push wouldn't be recommended but if circumstances required it (such as failing light or needing to use a faster shutter pec poste speed for moving subjects), it works well enough. The push of two stops has clearly raised the contrast of the images, but the highlights have held detail well. The detail in the shadows is notably less, but depending on the subject matter (and the aesthetics one is after) this isn't too problematic. This could be countered to some degree by using a higher dilution of developer, although as I wanted to keep the times relatively pec poste short, I kept with a dilution of Rodinal 1:25. Rollei RPX 100 at 400 EI, developed in Rodinal 1:25, 18 minutes at 20º Rollei RPX 100 at 400 EI, developed in Rodinal 1:25, 18 minutes at 20º From the (admittedly limited) tests, and subject matter, made for this blog post, my conclusions on Rollei RPX 100 are very similar to those for RPX 400: it's a good, versatile, black and white film with relatively fine grain, and the look of a traditional emulsion, available in 35mm and medium format at a very competitive price.

RPX will be the official at-track parts provider; they will provide speed post tracking parts to the race teams for the construction and maintenance of their cars. Today, well it is close to 12am so I will say Wednesday, RPX ( RPXC ) corporation filed 7 IPR requests against VirnetX ( VHC ). This comes after New Bay Capital LLC, a shell company, filed inter-partes reviews of some of the same patents city link - and then reversed course as they terminated their filings. Although New Bay Capital LLC may have terminated their requests by asking for an adverse judgment, VirnetX has not stopped there. After seeing the motion for transfer city link being sent back to the magistrate judge who recommend the case be transferred from Florida to Texas, it was recently granted . This means that VirnetX city link will be able to seek discovery of exactly who is really behind the curtains of the IPR requests by New Bay Capital LLC and Joel Rothman. city link Keep in mind that VirnetX's subpoenas city link in Delaware have not been moved, although Judge Leonard Davis (The judge presiding over all of VirnetX's litigation in the Eastern District city link of Texas) will be aware of the shenanigans.
With regard to the New Bay Capital LLC IPR requests of VirnetX's patents, the shell company was looking for 10% of the company's final judgment with Apple ( AAPL ). Although it is my personal opinion that Apple attempted to join on New Bay Capital LLC's IPR requests since Apple's requests were over the one year limit. Don't think Apple wanted to join in on New Bay Capital's IPRs, think again.
As you can see above, Apple already has 11 pending IPR requests on VirnetX. So why take a stand to join in on New Bay's IPR requests? Apple's requests are over the year limit set forth by the USTPO, and as such they will likely be turned down. That is why Apple was grasping to join New Bay Capital LLC's IPR requests.
Now this conference between VirnetX, New Bay Capital LLC and Apple took place on October 29. On November 13 VirnetX announced the favorable city link termination of New Bay's IPR requests. Boom, Apple's attempt to join New Bay Capital has been eliminated. For a link to this conference call, please click here .
Keep in mind that although New Bay Capital LLC's IPR requests were terminated, the case from Florida has been transferred to the Eastern District of Texas to Judge Davis who is overseeing all of the company's litigation. VirnetX is seeking discovery as to who exactly is behind the curtain. Now although it is not known , if Apple is in anyway linked city link to New Bay Capital LLC, then collateral estoppel could be applied. city link This would thwart all of Apple's IPR requests as they were the real party of interest. city link It will be interesting to see who exactly is behind city link the curtains, whether it be a hedge fund manipulating the stock price or Apple.
Now seven days after VirnetX announces the termination of the IPR cases with New Bay, RPX corporation comes out and files seven new IPR requests on VirnetX. These requests by RPX are much the same, extremely city link close to those filed by New Bay Capital LLC. I will not drag this discussion out as to compare city link the wording and the material of each filing, as they are freely accessible online :(just put 0 for a case number, hit search, filter by party name by entering either New Bay or RPX and hit filter city link results). The first RPX filing listed in this picture does not correlate to VirnetX, just the following seven.
In an effort to not drag out a boring comparison of the wording, I will let those so inclined to compare on their own. Although below you will see a table with the prior art being used in an example of the two IPR requests on the '135 patent. Below is not a definitive and comprehensive list, just of the '135 patent between the two companies.
Another note for discussion is that New Bay Capital LLC did not lose its IPR requests. They sought to terminate city link their IPRs themselves after the case was recommended to be transferred and then granted transfer in part to Florida. city link

Now, Apple's appeal is pushed even more months beyond the conclusion of RPX's IPR requests. This is due to the fact that now, Apple's appeal is underway. Moreover even if the appeal started today, which it hasn't as it already is underway, these IPRs would still be concluded after the appeal with Apple is concluded. One of Apple's tactics would be to use the IPR to bolster an appeal. Although keep in mind that Apple lost at court the first time around, the company's IPRs have not been successful and the appeal is not completed.
